Happy Happy

Interesting to note how several people had the same idea at the same time.  I was out walking the dogs the other night and I realized that a few famous blog personalities had anniversaries on the same day.

Mega congrats to Lotta Joy and Terri for celebrating their anniversaries on Wednesday.  Our anniversary is coming up on Sunday.  It's hard to imagine it's been only 34 years since we tied the knot.  It's a long ways down that road and we are at that "comfortable" stage in life where we prefer to keep things low key.  Flowers, dinner, no big gifts.  I offered to take momma to Vegas for the weekend, but she's still taking care of SIL and is not really fond of flying.  Besides, I think she would prefer me to knock out some overdue "honey-dos" around the hacienda.  I am finally planning to have the driveway replaced.  Nothing says I love you like new concrete....

In stitches

Better day.  Grayson is almost back to his goofy antics.  Took both for a walk this morning and he is back to galloping around the park like normal.  I've wanted to avoid the "cone of shame" because none of them like it, but this morning I caught him scratching himself under the chin and he pulled out a few staples.  Quick run back to the vet and a quick staple job and he is back at home moping with his new fashion statement.

Felt sorry for him, so I ran out to pet store and got an inflatable collar.  He's much happier, even if it looks like he is sporting a life preserver.

Claire, on the other hand, was pretty much happy just to not have to wear any new collar.

Still holding out hope for a quiet weekend.  Seems like it is the time of year for nuptials.  First, ShadowRun celebrated their 22nd anniversary, then Terri marked the big 25, and then Lotta Joy turned 12.  I reckon that everyone had the same general time of year in mind when it comes to love.  Today marks our 33rd trip around the merry-go-round.  It seems like it was just a few years ago we were a pair of newlyweds starting out in life without a clue.  Around the time when we got married, Carter was still in office, Mount St Helens would erupt two weeks later, and The Empire Strikes Back opened.  A lot of things have changed over the last 3 decades.

Dishing up the dirt

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  Have a Margarita or Corona on me.  Funny thing about this "holiday" is that, while it is promoted big around here, they don't celebrate it in Mexico.  Methinks it is another one of those holidays contrived as an excuse to drink more alcohol (like St Patrick's Day).

Ever started a blog post and just couldn't find an end?  You know, some of those where you bang out a neat thought and by the time you get to the end, it seems totally lame?  That's the way it's been this week.  I started three different themes this week and all three are still on the drawing board waiting for my muse to show up.  The week has been busy (again).  We just finished up our financial year at the office and you'd think things would slow down at the start of the new year, but you'd be wrong.  I've been deluged with a pile of reports, meetings, reviews, end-of-year analyses, audit reports, etc.  It's that time of year when we do annual reviews and I am in the middle of writing assessment for all my people (one of my 1/2 baked themes).

I took off Friday to take care of some odd jobs.  Wanted to burn a day of vacation, had to take Grayson into the shop, was cleaning up the garage, intended to do some yard work, and had hoped to take my bride out for our anniversary dinner.  Yep.  It's that time again.  Time to renew the old contract, sign up for another year, slap on another coat of paint, dust off the dancing shoes and celebrate that momentous occasion from thirty two years ago.  32.  Wow.  Just writing that make me feel old.  There are countries that haven't been around that long.  When my bride and I said "I do", Carter was still in office, the Berlin Wall still stood, the US Hockey team defeated the Russians in the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid (Miracle on Ice), and gas was $1.25.  My how things have changed.

As I inferred, I had hoped to take my bride out for dinner, but, after 32 years, you learn that life has plans and things change and you learn to roll with the punches.  My wife is taking care of her parents and had to work late last night which left us a narrow window for a late lunch/early dinner.  Instead of cramming in a "quickie", we chose option 3 to celebrate Sunday evening for a more relaxed gig.  Gives me a chance to go out for more flowers and chocolate.

In the meantime, I know that each anniversary has certain traditional gifts (25 - Silver, 30 - Pearl).  So what do you get for your 32nd?

How about.........Mulch?

Ever few years, I rebuild our beds and replant bushes/flowers that got taken out by last year's drought.  Instead of hauling in 20-30 bags of mulch from Home Depot, it is cheaper to have a truck bring in a pile and I try to kill myself spreading the dirt.  I must be getting old, a few years ago, I could have knocked out this pile in half a day.  As it was, I did about 1/2 yesterday before I packed it in.  Plan to finish up this morning while it's cooler and go get some new plants/flowers.

4 years later

Wow.  Who’d a thunk this would have lasted this long?  I guess if they keep putting up such stellar programming like Jersey Shore, Survivor, Big Brother, and DWTS year after year, this meager blog can share some of that longevity.

Occasionally, I look back to see where I've been (or, if you're paranoid, to see if anyone is following you).  It is about this time of year that I mark a milestone of sorts.  Actually, it is two milestones.  The first being this meager excuse of a blog.  This is the place I go to ramble on about this and that, share stupid/funny stories, show endless pictures of my dogs, and complain about life in general.  I actually created this site back in spring of 2007 with a short coming outpost but I did not follow up with anything until almost a year later (found it hard to write something meaningful or intelligent).  I started posting in earnest in January after my surgery in 2008, so I tend to mark the beginnings of this site around that time.  4 years and thousands of words later, this thing has gotten legs, albeit wobbly ones.  I started out following dozens of other blog sites, each with a different theme/flavor.  Some have survived, some have closed up shop, some have disappeared into the winds.  I found a few favorites that I continue to follow religiously.  They serve as my muse/inspiration to continue to read and post new things.  I like to thank (or blame) Terri for starting this site.  I've followed her saga for years from kids to work to bowling to dogs, she's had an interesting journey that keeps drawing people back for more.  It was her stories and the way she spun them that inspired me to try my hand in this "blog stuff" although, I'll have to admit, I'm not as interesting or funny.  I have followed other sites (Abby, Meleah, RC) as well for their stories and insights and I thank each of you for your inspiration to keep this up.  Four years is not a long time, but I look back and find I have accomplished a lot. I’ve been on a cruise, I have been I've see my son graduate from college, start work and get engaged, I've traveled the world, got to meet one of my blog friends (thanks, RC), I have lost a dog but gained two more.  I've survived 4 half marathons, I’ve dislocated a shoulder, I’m still driving the same old truck, bought an iPod, bought a new computer.  I’ve done a lot in the last four turns around the sun.  Looking back, I consider myself one lucky SOB for the opportunities I’ve had and glad to have been able to share/bore them with everyone.

My second milestone is actually the impetus for some of the stuff I accomplished above.  I have made it a point to mark down on my calendar the anniversary of my surgery.  For those new to this game or with short term memory, 4 years ago yesterday I purged my system, donned some fashionable hospital scrubs, and went under the knife for Prostate cancer.  Was still a bit of a shock to me to be diagnosed with PC at only 50 years old.  I chose the surgery path and came out the other side “prostate free”.  If you are interested in some of the story, you can look back at my earlier postings.  I thought, in all my postings, I had described the saga in vivid detail, but was disappointed that I hadn't shared that with the rest of the world.  I actually started posting seriously while recovering from surgery and that’s where this little blog started out.  Blogging was something I didn't think I had in me, but I've managed to keep at it for a good while.  After the surgery, I changed my outlook on a few things.  After getting diagnosed in 2007, I decided to knock off one of my bucket list items - to run a marathon.  I couldn’t get in in 2008 (did not realize how far in advance you had to sign up) so I did the corresponding 5k that year.  But afterwards I signed up for the ½ Marathon (because I am only ½ crazy).  Been doing that shtick for 4 years now.  As I mentioned earlier on my marathon posts, I run as a reminder that I am still alive.  I am still pondering a full marathon at some point, but, for now, will stick with the ½ until my legs tell me different.  I started traveling more for the company and it has taken me places I haven't been to before.  I love to travel and have taken advantage of the trips I am assigned.  Oh, sure, I may grumble and gripe about plane travel and the TSA and hotel living, but, truthfully, I love it.

I usually mark this time here by getting on my soapbox and reminding everyone to get checked out.  Prostate cancer is one the leading causes of death for men just Breast cancer is with women.  Last time I ran the numbers, over 280,000 men are diagnosed with Prostate cancer each year.  A simple, precautionary PSA test can save you a world of grief.  As I have been told and told others, this stuff is preventable, if you catch it early enough.  The interesting fact I uncovered in all my research on pc was that, at some point in their lives, most men will either get prostate cancer or have it.  It strikes late in life (post 50) and is usually not detected until later when something else goes wrong.  Because it hits late in life and is not spotted through normal exams, men will typically die of other causes before prostate cancer will take its toll.  The takeaway here is to get checked out.  It is easy, relatively painless, and simple (blood test).  Some guys avoid it because of the stigma/embarrassment of getting a package check.  Embarrassing?  Perhaps, but I am too old to GAS and besides, the risk is too big to bet farm upon.  So, if you are a guy skirting 50, if you know of a guy over 50, if your brother/dad/son are getting on in years, please insist that they get checked out.  Life’s too short to spent it wondering “what if”.  I am a walking testament to the fact it does not have to be a fatal diagnosis.  I got checked out, dealt with it and I am still here after 4 years enjoying good beer and fine scotch and life in general and I am not making plans to go anywhere just yet.  End of my soapbox speech.

And I never imagined that I would have enough interesting stuff to say to fill up 4 years.

AWOL

I really love blogger.  Lest one might think I am slacking off or lazy (well, that might be true), but I've been trying to update my site but keep getting the "down for service" kinda message.  I swear, if I wasn't paying all this good money for this service, I'd haul off and move to an....  uh, wait a minute.  I don't pay anything for this stuff.  So I guess I get what I pay for.

To channel my inner Steve Martin:  It's been a wild & crazy week.  Working on reviews again.  Projects due.  Planning another round of audits in June/July.  Setting up our trip to Austin for junior's graduation.  Keeping the dogs entertained.

Let's see, when we last left our hero, he was getting ready to celebrate an anniversary and preparing for Mother's Day.  Anniversary #31 went well.  Enjoyed a quiet evening with my young bride out an Pappadeaux's (Cajun food).  Good food, a bit pricey, but the quality was exceptional, as usual.  Gave momma the new toy and she was excited.  We are still trying to work out the logistics of it, but, so far, it works great.  Really neat on the counter all lit up a night with blue back lights in the water tank.  Junior repeated his trick again, calling in an order for a Chocolate Mousse Cheesecake from the The Cheesecake Factory (a whole frickin cake).  Absolutely obscene dessert.  I had one piece and I am going to have to run another 10 miles just to burn off those calories.

Spent the first half of the week working to play catch up to the projects due.  Yesterday, we had an employee appreciation day at the local sports venue.  I've been through a number of these "team building" exercises and I did not have high expectations on this deal but I can honestly say I was wrong.  Lots of games/competition (dodgeball, sack races, Frisbee toss, tug of war, land ski races, water balloon toss).  It turned out to be a fun and entertaining event.  Will post pictures and back story tomorrow.  Lots of embarrassing pictures to pass along.  For a company function, it was pretty darn good.

At the end of my rope

How long?

How can you tell if you've been together too long?

If, for your anniversary, you wind up giving each other the exact same card, like we did last year.

Tomorrow is numero treinta uno.  Tradition has it that pearls are the gift for 30 (diamonds are the modern answer), but what do you get for 31?  Typically we do not splurge on ourselves for anniversaries (see previous post about college student).  This year I kinda went outside the box.  I'm a simple guy and have simple needs, but this one tweaked my inner geek.  I've been eye-balling one for a while and finally I went out Sunday and secured me one.

Coincidence

With all of last week's hoopla over the rescue of the miners, I found it interesting to note that Thursday (10/14) was the anniversary of when they rescued Jessica McClure in Midland, Texas. It was 23 years ago that she fell down an open well shaft and it took 58 and a small army of of rescue workers to pull her out of the well. According to some of the pundits, her saga garnered worldwide attention that was only second to the death of Princess Diana.

Of course, this was before there was the Internet, 24 hour news feeds, instant messaging, cell phone cameras, digital photography, facebook, and twitter.  With all the tragedies and bad news around the world, it is nice to see & hear a few good stories.

Six and a half decades

Happy Anniversary to the parental units!

The old folks got hitched back in 1945.  A young couple starting out in life right after the war.  He a former B17 pilot getting his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.  Her a young woman working for the government.  Long time couple from high school.  Both were in the band (Its just like this one time at band camp?).  He joined the Army Air corps.  She followed him out to Arizona while in training.  Starting out young and in love, with a endless future in front of them.  65 years later, 3 sons, 3 daughter-in-laws, 5 grandsons, 2 granddaughter-in-laws, 1 great grand-daugher.  Life's been pretty interesting for them.

They joined the Airstream club about the time I graduated from college and have been highly active in it for decades. Even now, they are off for the summer at a rally in Wyoming. That's pretty much been their pattern for years and (head north during the summer) and, given the fact the temps are in the mid 90s down here for a while, I wish I could head north for the summer as well.

Happy Anniversary from your yougest child down in Texas!

Whirlwind weekend

As if things weren't hectic enough, we took off for the weekend to head out to Kerrville to attend a graduation ceremony for my nephew.  At 28, this has been a long time coming.  He hasn't had the easiest time getting to this point and there have been a lot of challenges along the way and, quite frankly, we weren't certain this was going to happen, but Andrew finally earned his sheepskin this weekend.  So the entire family (sans brother #2 in Seattle) made the trek out to west Texas to attend the ceremony.  Even my kid drove out from Austin to make it just under the wire to watch Andrew walk across.  Small university with about 250 graduating seniors.  This is the last child of 4 for my oldest brother, so they can finally claim they have no kids in school after a very long time.  We are grateful for our only one.  My parents made it out for the gig.  At 88+, they are not sure how many more they will be able to attend, but we have one more to go (for the grand kids).  My son is on target to graduate next spring in Austin.  Already making tentative plans for next spring.  In the meantime, I will have to go back to Austin later this month to help extract him out of his apartment.  He and his buddy are renting a house up in Austin this summer and he has landed another internship in Austin this year, so he will  much closer to home and momma.  Not sure where he will be staying, but he has a plan (just would be nice to know what it is).

Was a good, but long road trip.  The parents, the older brother and us took our trailers out to Kerrville Friday to camp out before the ceremony.  Kerrville is a long haul from here without a rig to tow.  At least 1.5 hours west of San Antonio, it took us 5 hours to make the trek out and 6 coming back.  Traffic was OK, just slow at spots.  The country out past San Antonio is very beautiful (IMHO).  Start of the Texas Hill Country with lots of small hills and scrub oaks.  The blue bonnets were all gone, but a lot of flowers still remained.  Weather was iffy, so no good photo ops.  The dogs travelled very well for the first long road trip.  They were well behaved and the darling of everyone at the campground.  Goldens are typical magnets and love any attention they get.  Biggest problem I had was with the grass burrs.  Since Kerrville is a very dry country, most of the grass was dried up with lots of weeks and burrs.  Every time I walked the dogs, even for a short walk around the RV park, I wound up picking burrs out of their feet/coats for 20 minutes afterwards.  Both were very patient, but Claire has developed a tendency/preference to walk in the road rather than the grass.  One woman had a pair of huge, white Great Pyrenees that dwarfed Grayson & Claire.  Gorgeous dogs, very gentle & calm.  They were happy to see our Goldens as that us the only dog they are allowed to play with (due to their size & stature).  These were trained herding dogs and could typically herd sheep in an open field.  At 150+ lbs each, Grayson was somewhat intimidated by their size.  With the grass burr problem, when I ran into this woman, both dogs look like they had been rolling in a field of burrs.  Probably took half the day to dethatch them.

And momma & I had a great, quiet anniversary last week.  Dinner out at The Cheesecake Factory and, as like last year, the son ordered us a Cheesecake (Godiva Chocolate).  One slice has enough calories to sustain a person for weeks.  A funny corollary to our anniversary was with the cards.  While shopping for an anniversary card (I prefer the funny ones), I spotted a card with two Golden Retrievers sitting side by side.  The inside comment was "Another Year Closer to Looking like Each Other".  I liked the card, but thought it was more of a card to give to another couple, so I bought it to give to my brother and his wife next month.  Brought the card home and momma spotted it on the desk and noted that she has bought the same card before realizing it was more of a "give to someone else card".  Funny.  What makes this ironic is that, our darling son who is miles away in Austin, sent us a card for our anniversary and take a guess as what card he sent us.  Freaky.  Que the twilight zone music...

Roadside attractions

I enjoy driving.  Not a big fan of flying as much anymore, given all of the hassles and costs, but I'll take a long distance drive over flying any day.  A few weeks back I drove to Dallas for my aunt's funeral.  Could have taken a flight and been there in 1/2 the time, but I preferred to drive up this time of year.

Springtime in Texas brings out lots of color.  The roadsides and fields have exploded with Bluebonnets and Indian Painbrush.  With all of the rain we've had and colder winter, the flowers are at their peak right now.  A lot of people travel the back roads on the weekends in search some great backdrops.  I am taking the crew out to Kerrville later this month for a graduation and will look for some roadside color along the way.

And momma & I crossed another milestone today.

30 years
Way back in spring of 1980, 2 young, innocent (ok, I wasn't so innocent) kids hooked up.
Where does the time go?
When did we get old?
We are planning a quiet celebration.

Celebrating life

Ya know, sometimes you just have to cowboy up and get on with life. Was feeling a bit peckish this morning after my long night, but was able to get some rest and started feeling well enough to go to the office for a bit. Slept until 1300 and woke up feeling MUCH BETTER, so I decided to head into the office to see if I could at least knock out a few reports that were due today. I was able to skate out after 5 to come home and take my sweetie to the Cheesecake Factory for our anniversary dinner. We have a new one down here that I have never eaten at and I thought it would be nice for the two of us. Slow night, lite crowd. Even given my recent digestive problems, I felt OK enough to try something not too heavy. Think I will stick with chicken or fish for a while. Very nice dinner & great food. Of course, the specialty there is cheesecake. My son, who is off in school in Austin, had called in an order for an entire cake for us that is absolutely decadent. The cake is just oozing chocolate. Not sure how we will be able to eat this thing, but we'll just have to cowboy up and give 'er a try.

Nom nom nom...

Great gift from a great son!

Inspite of all rumors to the contrary, life's pretty damn good
